Description
Minuet, Op. 21 was composed by Edward Elgar (1857-1934) in 1897 for piano, then orchestrated later that same year. This work falls just before the period of his breakthrough to international fame with the Enigma Variations. The short piece was premiered at New Brighton on July 16, 1899, conducted by Granville Bantock. The Minuet, Op. 21 occupies a modest but appealing place in the repertoire, occasionally performed as a charming concert miniature. Instrumentation: 1.1.2.1: 2.0.0.0: Timp: Str (9.8.7.6.5 in set). While written for a small orchestra, it may also be performed by Strings alone, where the players would play all of the small notes, or with any of the wind parts included in the score.
