Description
Památník Lidicím (Memorial to Lidice), H. 296 was written by Bohuslav Martinu (1890-1959) within a few days in August of 1943 at Darlen (Connecticut, USA), under the impression of the horrible news which announced the extermination of the Czechoslovak village Lidice (near Prague) by the NAZIs. The composition was first performed on October 2, 1943, at the Carnegie Hall, New York, by the New York Philharmonic Orchestra under Artur Rodzinski, at the celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Czechoslovak Republic. The first performance in Prague was conducted by Rafael Kubelik on March 14, 1946, when the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra played it on the eve of the seventh anniversary of the German occupation of Czechoslovakia. Instrumentation: 3.2+1(EH).3.2: 4.2.3.1: Timp,Perc(2): Hp.Pno: Str (9.8.7.6.5 in set). Reprint edition.
