Description
Influenced in part by Mozart's missae breves, Franz Schubert's MASS No. 4 in C, Op. 48/d. 452 was composed in 1816, possibly premiering late that same year at the Lichtental Church, now part of Vienna. Originally scored for SATB soloist, SATB choir, 2 violins, cello, double bass, and organ, Schubert added additional optional instruments for an 1825 performance at St. Ulrich Church in Vienna. And only seven weeks before his death, Schubert revisited the mass one final time in 1828 to rewrite the Benedictus (formerly cataloged as D. 961) in a setting for chorus and orchestra only, replacing the original version for soprano solo and orchestra. In this reprint of the 1887 Eusebius Mandyczewski edition, performers are able to choose from any of the iterations, to include the original 1816 scoring or the 1825 expanding scoring. Both versions of the Benedictus are also included in this edition. Instrumentation: 0.2 (opt.; sub. 2Cls).0.0: 0.2(opt.).0.0: Timp(opt.): Org: Str (4.4.0.3.3 in set): Solo SATB: Mix Chorus.
