Description
Gerald Finzi (1901-1956) composed Introit, Op. 6 in 1925, subsequently revising it in 1942, as a serene concertante work for solo violin and small orchestra. It originated as the central movement of Finzi's youthful Violin Concerto, written for the violinist Sybil Eaton, to whom the work was dedicated; after Ralph Vaughan Williams conducted the complete concerto in 1928, the highly self-critical Finzi withdrew the outer movements but preserved the slow movement as the independent Introit. Marked Molto sereno, the piece gives the violin a long, soaring melodic line against an orchestral accompaniment of unusual independence and delicacy, displaying the pastoral lyricism associated with the English musical renaissance and inviting comparison with Vaughan Williams's The Lark Ascending. The movement was first performed as part of the concerto on May 4, 1927 at London's Queen's Hall, with Sybil Eaton and the British Women's Symphony Orchestra conducted by Malcolm Sargent; as the independent Introit, it received its first performance on January 31, 1933 at London's Ballet Club Theatre in a concert conducted by Iris Lemare. Today, Introit, Op. 6 remains one of Finzi's most admired instrumental miniatures, valued for its contemplative beauty, characteristically spacious lyricism, and eloquent writing for violin and orchestra; although less frequently encountered than his Clarinet Concerto or Eclogue, it has maintained an established place in recordings and in the twentieth-century British concert repertoire. Instrumentation: 1.1+1(EH).2.1: 2.0.0.0: Str (9.8.7.6.5 in set): Solo Violin in set. Reprint edition.
