Description
Vincenzo Bellini (1801-1835) composed Il Pirata between March and October 1827, setting a libretto by Felice Romani derived ultimately from Charles Maturin's Gothic tragedy Bertram, or The Castle of St. Aldobrand. The opera initiated Bellini's enormously productive collaboration with Romani and proved the young composer's first major international success. Set in thirteenth-century Sicily amid political conflict between Angevin and Manfredian factions, the drama centers on the exiled nobleman and pirate Gualtiero, his former lover Imogene, and her husband Ernesto, combining the supernatural atmosphere and emotional extremity of Romantic drama with the emerging Italian bel canto style. The Overture prepares this turbulent world through forceful orchestral gestures, contrasting lyrical passages, and the dramatic sense of impending catastrophe that characterizes the opera as a whole. Il Pirata premiered on October 27, 1827, at La Scala in Milan, with Giovanni Battista Rubini as Gualtiero, Henriette Méric-Lalande as Imogene, and Antonio Tamburini as Ernesto. Its striking success helped establish Bellini beyond Naples and was followed rapidly by performances elsewhere in Europe. Today, Il Pirata: Overture remains well outside the standard orchestral repertoire and is heard principally in connection with revivals and recordings of the complete opera, but it retains historical importance as an early example of the dramatic Romantic style that Bellini would refine in La sonnambula, Norma, and I puritani.
