Description
Christian Wolff is now the sole living composer from the New York School of composition from the middle of the 20th century, a group that included John Cage, Morton Feldman, and Earle Brown. Hold the Line is an open-instrumentation composition where Wolff directs performers to pick between 3 and 30 players, choose from 25 sections, decide to overlap them or not, and/or repeat them. Its title refers to a protest song of the same name by the American activist and singer-songwriter Pete Seeger, a portion of which Wolff included in his work Resistance.
