Description
Giovanna d'Arco was composed in 1844-1845 by Giuseppe Verdi (1813-1901) during his prolific early period often referred to as his "anni di galera," ("years in the galleys") when he was rapidly establishing himself as Italy's leading operatic voice. Based loosely on Friedrich Schiller's drama about Joan of Arc, the opera reimagines the French heroine's story with heightened Romantic emphasis on personal faith, paternal conflict, and patriotic fervor rather than strict historical accuracy. The plot centers on Giovanna's divine visions, her love for King Charles VII, and the tragic misunderstanding by her father, who believes her inspired mission to be diabolical before ultimately recognizing her innocence at her death. The opera premiered on February 15, 1845, at La Scala in Milan and enjoyed initial success, though it was later overshadowed by Verdi's more mature works. The opera's Overture today appears occasionally in concert programs as a compelling example of Verdi's early orchestral writing.
