The fact that this comment is coming from a native percussionist, hearing about the Wounded Knee massacre scares me but brings different layers of music that is beautiful. The flute has a soft feeling of healing, the woodwinds have the feeling of bravery, trumpets have the sound of courage, and the percussion has the feeling of the indigenous people being relentless and fearless of fighting for their people

I played this song as an oboe player who had only first started learning the instrument 3-4 months before we were supposed to perform it. I still have that solo memorized from how many times I practiced it.

I have the trumpet solo in the beginning and it's very scary because of how exposed it is. But I love it, my band director said that the solo was the main part that he chose the piece and then gave it to me 🤭. Overall this piece is amazing and I love playing it

1st chair trumpet here. Super fun. Those high Bb's get a bit annoying but still a really musically interesting piece.
