Description
One of Maurice Ravel's most impressive musical and technical achievements is Gaspard de la nuit. It is a monumental masterpiece of the entire piano repertoire and Ravel's greatest piano work - a triptych based upon the prose poetry of Aloysius Bertrand. Of the 51 poems in Bertrand's collection, Ravel selected three: Ondine comes from the third book of Bertrand's Gaspard poems entitled La nuit et ses prestiges ("The Night and its Spells"). And both Le Gibet and Scarbo are taken from the supplemental thirteen pièces détachées. This newly engraved edition by Richard Dowling includes a thoroughly researched preface that includes performance suggestions for each movement, the poems in both the original French and English translation, corrections of numerous errors from the original publication, and Dowling's fingerings and other practical performing additions to make the work easier to play.
