Description
Josef Strauss (1827-1870) composed his Gablenz-Marsch, Op. 159 in the spring of 1864, during the Second Schleswig War, as a tribute to Austrian general Ludwig Freiherr von Gablenz (1814-1874), who commanded the Austrian VI Army Corps in the campaign against Denmark and gained particular distinction at the Battle of Oeversee. Written in the brilliant Viennese military-march tradition, the piece combines ceremonial brass writing and vigorous martial rhythms with the melodic polish characteristic of the Strauss family's dance music. The first documented performance took place on March 28, 1864, at the k.k. Volksgarten in Vienna, at a concert given by Josef and Eduard Strauss. Although the march circulated in nineteenth-century concert programs, it did not achieve the lasting popularity of Josef Strauss's best-known waltzes and polkas. Today, Gablenz-Marsch, Op. 159 is a comparatively rare item in the Strauss family repertoire, preserved through recordings, modern reprint editions, and occasional performances, and valued both as an effective concert march and as a musical document of Austrian patriotic culture during the turbulent events of 1864. Instrumentation: 1+1(Picc).2.1+1(EbCl).2: 4.2.1.0: Timp.Perc(1): Str (9.8.7.6.5 in set): CS (Pno-Cond) in set. Reprint edition.
