Description
Vincent d'Indy (1851-1931) composed La Forêt enchantée (The Enchanted Forest), Op. 8, in 1878, drawing inspiration from the poetic and mystical atmosphere of the Romantic fascination with nature and legend. One of his earliest orchestral works, the symphonic poem reflects the influence of d'Indy's teacher, César Franck as well as the rich orchestral language of Wagner. La Forêt enchantée evokes a mysterious woodland world filled with wonder, enchantment, and hidden drama. Premiered in Paris in the late 1870s, the work helped establish d'Indy as a rising figure in French musical life. Though less frequently performed today than his later works such as the Symphonie sur un chant montagnard français, La Forêt enchantée remains an example of early French symphonic poetry.
