Description
Richard Wagner (1813-1883) composed Die Feen (The Fairies), WWV 32 in 1833-34, completing the score on January 6, 1834, when he was only twenty. His first completed opera, it uses Wagner's own libretto based on Carlo Gozzi's fairy-tale drama La donna serpente and already explores themes (supernatural and human worlds in conflict, forbidden questions, and redemption through love) that would recur throughout his mature operas. The Overture, sketched late in 1833, reflects the strong influence of Carl Maria von Weber and Heinrich Marschner, combining a solemn slow introduction with an energetic Romantic allegro while offering early glimpses of the orchestral language Wagner would develop in Tannhäuser and Lohengrin. Although the complete opera remained unstaged during Wagner's lifetime and was not premiered until June 29, 1888, at Munich's Königliches Hof- und Nationaltheater under Franz Fischer, the overture appears to have received an earlier independent performance on January 10, 1835, at the Magdeburg Theater. Today, Die Feen: Overture remains a rarity compared with Wagner's mature overtures and preludes, but occasional performances and recordings preserve it as a fascinating document of his early development and his roots in German Romantic opera. Instrumentation: 2.2.2.2: 4.2.3.0: Timp: Str (9.8.7.6.5 in set). Reprint edition.
