Description
Richard Wagner (1813-1883) composed Das Liebesverbot (The Ban on Love), WWV 38 in 1835-36, after writing its libretto in 1834. Loosely based on Shakespeare's Measure for Measure, the two-act comic opera relocates the action to Palermo and transforms Shakespeare's story into a youthful celebration of sensual freedom in opposition to political and moral repression, reflecting the influence of the liberal Young Germany (Junges Deutschland) movement. The Overture immediately establishes this unusually exuberant side of Wagner, employing brilliant brass, percussion, lively rhythms, and Italianate melodic writing far removed from the musical language of his mature dramas. Its festive character anticipates the opera's climactic Carnival celebrations and reveals the strong influence of contemporary French and Italian opera. The complete Das Liebesverbot received its world premiere on March 29, 1836, at the Stadttheater Magdeburg, conducted by Wagner himself. The financially troubled company mounted only this single, poorly prepared performance, and a planned second was cancelled after a backstage altercation, after which the opera was not performed again during Wagner's lifetime. Today, Das Liebesverbot: Overture remains a rarity compared with the overtures and preludes to Wagner's mature operas, but occasional performances and recordings preserve it as a fascinating example of his early development and of the light, cosmopolitan operatic style he would soon largely abandon. Instrumentation: 2+1(Picc).2.2.2: 4.4.3.1: Timp.Perc(4-5): Str (9.8.7.6.5 in set). Reprint edition.
