Description
Daniel-François-Esprit Auber (1782-1871) composed the Crown Diamonds Overture (Les Diamants de la couronne) in 1841 as the sparkling introduction to his three-act opéra-comique Les Diamants de la couronne, with a libretto by Eugène Scribe and Jules-Henri Vernoy de Saint-Georges. Set in eighteenth-century Portugal, the opera tells the fanciful story of Queen Catarina, who secretly replaces the crown jewels with expertly crafted imitations in order to rescue the kingdom's troubled finances before her coronation. Auber's overture encapsulates the work's blend of elegance, intrigue, and lighthearted comedy through graceful lyrical themes, brilliant orchestral color, and buoyant rhythmic vitality, drawing upon melodies heard later in the opera while foreshadowing its festive conclusion. The opera and its overture received their premiere on March 6, 1841, at the Opéra-Comique (Salle Favart) in Paris and quickly became one of Auber's greatest theatrical successes, remaining in the repertory there for hundreds of performances throughout the nineteenth century. Today, the Crown Diamonds Overture continues to enjoy an independent life in the concert hall and concert band repertoire, admired for its effervescent charm, refined orchestration, and quintessential embodiment of French Romantic opéra-comique, while serving as one of Auber's most enduring orchestral works.
