Description
Carl Maria von Weber (1786-1826) composed his Concerto for Piano No. 2 in E-flat Major, Op. 32/J. 155 between 1811 and 1812, during a period when he was establishing himself as one of Europe's leading virtuoso pianists and a pioneer of German Romanticism. Dedicated to Duke Emil Leopold August of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg, the concerto reflects Weber's admiration for Beethoven, particularly his recently published Piano Concerto No. 5, the Emperor, which shares the same key and an unusual B-major slow movement. The work consists of three movements: 1. Allegro maestoso; 2. Adagio; 3. Rondo: Presto. Combining brilliant keyboard virtuosity with dramatic orchestral writing, the opening movement features bold themes, rapid passagework, and striking contrasts, while the lyrical Adagio anticipates the expressive intensity of later Romantic piano music. The exuberant finale, composed first in 1811, employs a lively 6/8 rhythm and displays Weber's characteristic humor and rhythmic vitality. Weber gave the concerto's premiere on December 17, 1812, in Gotha, appearing as soloist at the ducal court, and subsequently performed it in Leipzig, Prague, and Vienna. First published in Berlin in 1814, the concerto helped establish Weber's reputation as both pianist and composer. Today, Concerto for Piano No. 2 in E-flat Major, Op. 32/J. 155 remains outside the standard concerto repertoire, overshadowed by his more frequently performed Konzertstück, but is admired for its technical brilliance, expressive originality, and important place in the transition from Classical to Romantic piano concerto traditions. Instrumentation: 2.0.2.2: 2.2.0.0: Timp: Str (9.8.7.6.5 in set): Solo Piano. Reprint edition.
