Description
Concerto for Harpsichord No. 5 in F minor, BWV 1056 was composed around 1738-1739 by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) during his Leipzig years, when he produced a remarkable series of keyboard concertos for performance at the Collegium Musicum concerts held in coffeehouses and public venues. The work is widely believed to be Bach's own arrangement of an earlier, now-lost concerto for violin or oboe (sometimes reconstructed as BWV 1056R), reflecting his common practice of reworking instrumental material for new contexts and performers. The concerto's famous slow movement, with its serene cantabile line over gently pulsing accompaniment, has become one of Bach's most beloved lyrical inspirations. Today Concerto for Harpsichord No. 5 stands as a staple of the Baroque concerto repertoire. Instrumentation: Solo Harpsichord: Str (4.4.3.3.3 in set). Reprint of the edition by Wilhelm Rust, published in 1869 as part of the Bach-Gesellschaft Ausgabe (Bach Society Edition).
