Description
Concerto for Cello No. 1 in D Major, Op. 8 was composed in 1884 by Victor Herbert (1859-1924) during his early career as a virtuoso cellist and composer while still closely connected to the European musical world before his later fame in America. Written as a substantial Romantic concerto, the work was designed to showcase his own instrument. Although Herbert would eventually become best known for his operettas and contributions to American musical theater, this concerto stands as evidence of his serious ambitions in the classical concert tradition. The concerto was first performed in the mid-1880s, likely with Herbert himself as soloist, though precise premiere documentation remains limited. Today Concerto for Cello No. 1 occupies a respected if less frequently heard place in the cello repertoire. Instrumentation: 2(2nd dPicc).2.2.2: 4.2.3.0: Timp: Hp: Str (9.8.7.6.5 in set): Solo Cello in set. Reprint edition.
