Description
Richard Wernick (1934-2025), an American composer and recipient of the 1977 Pulitzer Prize for Music, wrote Chanukah Festival Overture for concert band. Educated at Brandeis University and Mills College, Wernick studied with Irving Fine, Aaron Copland, and Leon Kirchner and became an influential teacher of composition at the University of Pennsylvania. His music frequently explores religious and philosophical subjects, reflecting a broader interest in the expressive possibilities of sacred traditions. Chanukah Festival Overture takes its inspiration from Chanukah, the eight-day Jewish Festival of Lights commemorating the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem following the Maccabean revolt in the second century BCE. The festival celebrates religious perseverance and the traditional miracle of a small quantity of consecrated oil burning for eight days. Written for the wind-band medium, the overture contributes to the comparatively limited body of concert-band music associated with Jewish religious and cultural celebrations. The work can be performed with an optional chorus.
