Description
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) composed Cantata No. 21: Ich hatte viel Bekümmernis (I Had Much Grief), BWV 21 in Weimar, probably beginning in 1713 and substantially revising it for a documented performance on June 17, 1714, the Third Sunday after Trinity. Bach later returned to the work several times, notably for Leipzig in 1723, and designated it per ogni tempo ("for any occasion"), reflecting its broad spiritual progression from suffering and doubt to consolation and praise. Probably drawing partly on a text by Salomon Franck, the cantata incorporates passages from Psalms 94, 42, and 116, Georg Neumark's chorale Wer nur den lieben Gott lässt walten, and Revelation 5:12-13. Its eleven movements are divided into two parts: 1. Sinfonia; 2. Chorus, Ich hatte viel Bekümmernis; 3. Aria, Seufzer, Tränen, Kummer, Not; 4. Recitative, Wie hast du dich, mein Gott; 5. Aria, Bäche von gesalznen Zähren; 6. Chorus, Was betrübst du dich, meine Seele; 7. Recitative, Ach Jesu, meine Ruh; 8. Duet, Komm, mein Jesu, und erquicke; 9. Chorus, Sei nun wieder zufrieden; 10. Aria, Erfreue dich, Seele; 11. Chorus, Das Lamm, das erwürget ist. Beginning in the dark sonorities of C minor and culminating in a jubilant final chorus with trumpets and timpani, the work demonstrates the remarkable dramatic and structural ambition of Bach's pre-Leipzig cantatas. Today, Cantata No. 21: Ich hatte viel Bekümmernis, BWV 21 is regarded as one of Bach's most substantial and frequently performed early cantatas, admired especially for its expressive range, large scale, and powerful journey from affliction to spiritual assurance.
