Description
Known as "the Cuban Gershwin," Ernesto Lecuona (1893-1963) influenced the Latin American music world in a manner quite similar to the way Gershwin elevated jazz music, in his case raising the status of Cuban music to the classical world. A great deal of Lecuona's music was first introduced to American audiences by Desi Arnaz, a fellow Cuban and Lucille Ball's spouse. Andalucía (Suite Española) was originally composed by Ernesto Lecuona for solo piano. The suite's opening movement, "Córdoba," evokes the historic Andalusian city through lyrical melodies, Spanish dance rhythms, and harmonies suggesting the region's Moorish heritage. Merle J. Isaac's colorful orchestral arrangement, published by Edward B. Marks Music in 1948, expands the piano original into a richly textured concert piece, emphasizing its contrasting passages of expressive lyricism and rhythmic vitality. Today, "Córdoba" remains a lesser-known selection from Lecuona's celebrated suite, particularly in its orchestral arrangements, but continues to be appreciated as an evocative example of his Spanish-inspired writing and occasionally appears in concerts devoted to Spanish and Latin American music. Instrumentation: 2.2.2.2: 2Sax (AT): 4.2.3.1: Timp.Perc(2): Str (9.8.7*.6.5 in set): CS (Pno-Cond) in set. *Vn3 sub. part included (3 copies).
