I knew immediately that somehow I needed to turn the despair I felt into something positive: I stopped playing, moved to Scotland, and focused fulltime on composing.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cp\u003eTwenty-five years later, by an extraordinary turn of events, my youngest child became a luthier. Her first instrument was a viola, which gave me back my voice and a return to performing - coinciding with a return to England. This echoes the aspect of Campbell's \"journey\" wherein the protagonist returns with a lost treasure.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cp\u003eThis piece is the second* in which I've used a spelling of my own name, translating the letters (SFBEAMISH) into musical notation. All of these are readily available in the German musical scale, apart from \"MI\", which of course is the note E in solfège. \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe music explores many emotions, beginning with a gentle exposition leading to a sighing, lyrical second section, then an ebullient scherzo focusing on viola and cello. The music uses solely the letters of my name until the fourth episode, which abandons some notes and adds a \"G\" to create a pentatonic sound-world - from which emerges a lullaby I wrote when I was first in Scotland. The viola is a ghostly presence in this section, finally calling the instruments back to the original melodic material and leading them in a canon. The penultimate section is a return to the sighing theme at the beginning, this time boldly expressive and building to a climax, followed by a meditative viola cadenza.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cp\u003ePredominant throughout the music is the idea of bells. The six sections are punctuated by bell-like refrains, beginning with a single chime, and adding one more  at each new section. The final coda consists of 6 bell chimes, fading into the distance.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe title Spell has a variety of resonances. The \"spelling\" of my name, of course, but also the idea of an event \"spelling\" something portentous. It can also mean a spell, or period, of time - often of work. And equally significantly, a \"spell\", or charm, which transforms life in unexpected and magical ways.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cp\u003e\"The usual hero adventure begins with someone from whom something has been taken, or who feels there is something lacking in the normal experience available or permitted to the members of society. The person then takes off on a series of adventures beyond the ordinary, either to recover what has been lost or to discover some life-giving elixir. The piece opens with an empty Swing, which is gradually set in motion. My trumpeter brother was crazy about football and bikes; my younger brother content to watch us as we invented games, one of which involved the swing, a bike, and a football  which was called Oily Oily. None of us can remember why, or what the rules were...\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe second movement, Midnight Blue, repeats a sequence of ten chords. This chaconne refers back to Bach, and my love of the piano duet arrangements I would play with my paternal grandmother. Our father was a shadowy figure, quiet, detached, and usually absorbed in his own projects. I remember a rare drinks party my parents had organised, when he wore a navy velvet jacket which he called his midnight blue. I wondered if the jacket had come from a racier past I would never know about. This music, though, is about his absence. He was there, but not there, and I only really got to know him after he left.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe central movement (tude) takes a bowing pattern I struggled with in my jazz lessons, giving me an opportunity to get to grips with it. The music is syncopated  intrinsically unstable, though set against a steady beat. That house in the crescent witnessed hours of practice  on violin, piano, viola, flute, trumpet - often simultaneously. The piece begins with the sound of tuning  a sound I dreaded as a small child, as it meant my mother was unreachable for at least an hour.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe fourth movement is a canon on a motif derived from my name, adding in a new countermelody each time the theme begins. The music evokes the daily reluctant walk to my first school, in Canonbury. I didn't like it, and always felt an outsider.\u003cbr\u003eThe work finishes with Hide and Seek. After a tentative piano opening, the music gathers into a playful exchange. After school the children in the Crescent would hide in the privet bushes, jump out at each other, have impromptu picnics in secret dens, and pretend not to hear the adults calling them in.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eSome of the music (e.g. the opening, and the canon), derives from a theme which uses the letters of my name: SFBEA(mi)SH  taking the German Es (E-flat) and H (B) as S(c)hostakovich did in his DSCH motif, and Schumann with his ASCH.
