From the beginning, the composer regarded the work as a piece of fun. He wrote to his publishers Durand in Paris that he was composing a work for the coming Shrove Tuesday, and confessing that he knew he should be working on his Third Symphony, but that this work was "such fun" ("... mais c'est si amusant!"). He had apparently intended to write the work for his students at the École Niedermeyer, but it was first performed at a private concert given by the cellist Charles Lebouc on Shrove Tuesday, 9 March 1886. No. 5, THE ELEPHANT (L'ÉLÉPHANT), for Double Bass (or Violoncello) and Piano, is marked Allegro pomposo, which is perfectly suitable to describing an elephant. This transcription is by Lucien Garban.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0697/6104/0520/files/36-M314891_large_a1a0adaa-c309-407c-82d1-d3946db912e7.jpg?v=1779255602
bruyeres-no-5-36-60710009
Bruyères, No. 5: Violin Solo with Piano
Unlike Bach and Chopin, Claude Debussy (1862-1918) wrote his twenty-four Préludes for solo piano without a clearly organized pattern of key relationships. They were written from December 1909 to April 1913, in two sets, with twelve preludes to each volume. Jane Mortier delivered the premiere of the first volume on May 3, 1911, at the Salle Pleyel in Paris. Walter Morse Rummel gave the first complete performance of the second volume on June 12, 1913, at the Aeolian Hall in London. Prelude No. 5 from Book 2, subtitled Bruyéres, bears similarity to another of his works for piano, La Fille aux cheveux de lin (The Girl with the Flaxen Hair).
