Spuriously attributed in 1910 to Giovanni Battista Pergolesi (1710-1736), the six-movement MAGNIFICAT was actually composed by Francesco Durante (1684-1755), proven by a signed manuscript housed in Naples. Highly esteemed by his contemporaries and described as \"one of the greatest Italian church composers and composition teachers of all time,\" Durante was Pergolesi's teacher, which may be where some of the confusion regarding this work's composer may have originated. Undoubtedly one of Durante's most important compositions, this work is one the most significant settings of this text (derived from Luke 1:46-55) in cantata form, masterfully combining the traditional polyphonic notation with modern, early Classical elements. Regardless of attribution, the work remains, next to Vivaldi's GLORIA and Pergolesi's STABAT MATER, among the most familiar pieces of 18th century Italian sacred music. The work was not published until 1827 along with a bundle of Mozart's other works sold by his widow Constanze, and no record exists of a commission or performance in Mozart's lifetime that might clear up the intent for the title. Any occasional attempt to revive the operas resulted in curiosity but not a proper revival. The great English conductor Sir Thomas Beecham (1879-1961) was among the few who was familiar with Handel's operas, owning thirty-seven of the forty-two surviving scores, which he annotated extensively, and which he used to frequently program individual arias. In an effort to make the concert-going audience aware of Handel's opera again, Beecham arranged\/orchestrated several concert suites and ballet suites over the course of several decades, using modern instrumental forces, a decision many critics found to be inappropriate. One of the ballet suites, THE GODS GO A'BEGGING (LES DIEUX MENDIANTS), was commissioned in 1928 by Serge Diaghilev for his Ballets Russes. The simple plot of the ballet introduces a shepherd who comes across a nobleman's picnic, where he ignores the attention given to him by two ladies, choosing to instead dance with a serving maid. The picnic party's indignation abates when the shepherd and maid are revealed to be gods in disguise. Following its July 1928 premiere at His Majesty's Theatre in London, the ballet became a staple of the Diaghilev company until the impresario's death, though other ballet companies did adopt the work themselves later. Intended as one of several tableaus written for a celebration that never happened of Emperor Alexander II of Russia's then 25-year reign, the work has remained popular on the concert stage since it was first performed. A programmatic work depicting Russians and Asians working together in Central Asia, Borodin included the following note in the score: \"In the silence of the monotonous steppes of Central Asia is heard the unfamiliar sound of a peaceful Russian song. From the distance we hear the approach of horses and camels and the bizarre and melancholy notes of an oriental melody. In four movements initially, Sibelius reworked his most popular symphony into three movements in the midst of his own internal debate about whether he should continue composing in the late Romantic style with which he was so familiar or follow the compositional changes that were taking place with modernists such as Schoenberg or Stravinsky or impressionists such as Ravel and Debussy. This crisis was resolved in his fifth symphony, where the composer chose to stay within the frames of harmonic language of late-19th century Romanticism, instead opting to innovate in the realms of macrostructure (three movements instead of four) and instrumental coloring (the swaying motif in the horns during the third movement which was inspired by swan-calls). Of the 1919 revision, Sibelius strove to give the work, \"a more human form, more down-to-earth, more vivid.\" The 1915 premiere took place on December 8th, 1915, performed by the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, with the composer conducting. The 1919 version was premiered by the same ensemble and conductor on November 24, 1919. It sets the entirety of Ode by Arthur O'Shaughnessy to music, a text that likely appealed to Elgar's sense of an artist's life and relationship to society. (The text begins with, \"We are the music makers, And we are the dreamers of dreams, Wandering by lone sea-breakers, And sitting by desolate streams.\") Perhaps given the kinship he felt to the text, Elgar's music is almost autobiographical in ways, quoting music from some of his own most popular works, including: The Dream of Gerontius, the Violin Concerto, \"sea-breakers\" from Sea Pictures, \"Nimrod\" from the Enigma Variations, Symphonies Nos. 1 and 2, the Violin Concerto, Rule, Britannia, and La Marseillaise. Despite the many quotations, most of the music is original. It premiered on October 1st, 1912 at the Birmingham Festival, with Muriel Foster singing the alto solo, and Elgar himself conducting the Festival Chorus and Orchestra. The composer said of the work, \"I gave everything to it I was able to give. What I have here accomplished, I will never achieve again.\" Seeming to recognize that it would be his last attempt at the symphonic form, the composer filled the work with virtuoso piano passages, brilliant Romantic-era orchestral writing, and the sound of a cathedral-sized pipe organ. The composer did note in his own analysis of the symphony that, while it was cast in two movements, \"the traditional four-movement structure is maintained.\" One of the symphony's outstanding and original features is its use of keyboard instruments, with piano, scored for both two and four hands at various places, and the pipe organ. The work uses its thematic material, derived from fragments of plainsong, as a unifying device as each melody appears in more than one movement. Saint-Saëns also employed a method of thematic variation borrowed from his friend Franz Liszt, to whose memory he dedicated the work. Tchaikovsky dedicated the work to the St. Petersburg Chamber Music Society in response to his becoming an Honorary Member. The work, in the traditional four-movement form, was titled Souvenir de Florence because the composer sketched one of the work's principal themes while visiting Florence, Italy, where he also composed The Queen of Spades. The work was revised between December 1891 and January 1892, before being premiered in 1892. It is the only string sextet he composed. This version of Souvenir de Florence is presented with the addition of a Contrabass part by American composer\/arranger Tom Myron. The first movement is in sonata form and, without introduction, presents a rather violent yet melodic first theme in D minor. The second theme, in the dominant key of A major, is much calmer; it flows from the first theme almost effortlessly and then proceeds into the development and recapitulation, which concludes with a quick coda. The slow second movement in D major has a very innocent, romantic theme initially stated by the first violin with pizzicato accompaniment before being taken up by the cello. Following an interlude for all of the instruments, the theme returns for a repeat of the first section. The last two movements, with their distinctly Russian and folk-like melodies and rhythms, greatly contrast with the previous ones. 11x14 oversized full score.\u003cbr\u003eThis product is Printed on Demand and may take several weeks to fulfill. He returned to the concerto in the summer of 1917. It premiered on October 18, 1923 at the Paris Opera with Marcel Darrieux playing the violin part and the Paris Opera Orchestra conducted by Serge Koussevitzky. Igor Stravinsky made his debut as conductor at the same concert, conducting the first performance of his own Octet for Wind Instruments. Despite the events leading to the abdication of Tsar Nicholas II of Russia and eventually the October Revolution, 1917 became Prokofiev's most productive year compositionally. Along with this concerto he completed the \"Classical\" Symphony, the Third and Fourth Piano Sonatas, and the Visions Fugitives for piano. He also began the cantata Seven, They Are Seven, based on Chaldean texts, and worked on the Third Piano Concerto. Similar to his second piano concerto, it is composed in a proto-Romantic style that anticipated later composers such as Mendelssohn, Chopin, Schumann, and Liszt. And this work was a favorite of a young Franz Liszt to perform, though critics complained about the speed with which he took the Rondo finale. Written only a year after completing his education at the Royal College of Music, this one-movement work full of ravishing melodies and lush string moments owes its existence to Coleridge-Taylor's mentor, Sir Edward Elgar. When Elgar was offered a commission by the 1898 Three Choirs Festival in Gloucester, Elgar responded, \"I have received a request from the secretary to write a short orchestra thing for the evening concert. I am sorry I am too busy to do so. I wish, wish, wish you would ask Coleridge-Taylor to do it. He still wants recognition, and he is far and away the cleverest fellow going amongst the young men. Please don't let your committee throw away the chance of doing a good act.\" Upon being offered the commission at Elgar's suggestion, Coleridge-Taylor wrote a work that develops his own voice while still retaining elements of his musical heroes such as Brahms, Tchaikovsky, and Dvorák. Although the composition of LA MER took him more than a year and a half, this was unusually quick progress by his standards. LA MER was premiered in Paris in October 1905 and was initially not well received. However, the work was performed in the US in 1907 and in Britain in 1908, and after its second performance in Paris, in 1908, it quickly became one of Debussy's most admired and frequently performed orchestral works. This edition by Clinton F. Nieweg, Nancy M. Bradburd, and Lawrence N. Halverson is based on the second published Durand edition of 1909, which included the composer's revisions. Le spectre de la rose (transposed in D): High Voice, Orchestra Accompaniment, Oversized Full Score","description":"The song cycle LES NUITS D'ETE (SUMMER NIGHTS) is a setting of six poems by composer Hector Berlioz' (1803-1869) neighbor and friend, Théophile Gautier. The text deals in themes of love in all its facets, progressing from youthful innocence to loss and renewal. Originally composed in 1841 for solo vocalist and piano, Berlioz completed orchestration of each of the six songs in 1856. While regrettably neglected for many years, this song cycle was rediscovered in the 20th century and has become one of the composer's most popular works. The songs in the original keys (1. A; 2. B; 3. F minor; 4. F-sharp; 5. D; 6. F) are available from the publisher both as a complete set (A2573) and individually. Robert Sutherland has edited five of the songs in the cycle and has transposed each in multiple keys to expand the work to more vocalists. Songs completed by Robert Sutherland: 1. Villanelle (E, F, and G), 4. Absence (Db, D, Eb, and E), 5. Au Cimetière, Clair de lune (Bb, B, and C), and 6. L'lle inconnue (D, Eb, and E). A transposition of 2. Le Spectre de la rose to D and a transposition of 3. Sur les Lagunes to g minor is also available from the publisher. Le spectre de la rose (The Ghost of the Rose) tells of a girl's dreams of the ghost of the rose she had worn to a ball the previous day. The rose has died and ascended to paradise; to have died on the girl's breast was a fate that kings might envy. Instrumentation: 2.1.2.0: 2.0.0.0: Hp: Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set): Solo Voice (high voice).
