Jean Sibelius (1865-1957) happened to be Järnefelt's brother-in-law, and he composed incidental music to the play under the same title (Kuolema, JS 113) in 1903. The incidental music originally included six numbers, and Sibelius himself conducted the premiere performance on December 2, 1903, with the Finnish National Theatre in Helsinki. The standout movement was the first one (Tempo di valse lente - Poco risoluto). In 1904, Sibelius revised this movement and titled it Valse triste, Op. 44 (Sad Waltz), which premiered on April 25, 1904, in Helsinki. In 1906, Sibelius also combined Nos. 3 and 4 from the original incidental music to create Scen med tranor (Scene with Cranes), and this was set as the second movement of Op. 44. But Valse triste was truly the breakout work, and for some time, it was the only work by Sieblius known outside of Finland. In the plot of the play, Paavali waits next to his mother in her deathbed, his mother dreaming of having gone to the ball. Paavali himself falls asleep, then Death comes to take his mother, but she believes Death to be her already dead husband, and she proceeds to dance the Valse triste with him. When Paavali awakes, his mother has passed. The melancholic work, as Sibelius' breakout work, remains a regular part of concert performances. While one might imagine some epic, adventurous inspiration, Sibelius was largely adamant that no program existed. The piece received wider acclaim in 1902 when the composer's friend Ferruccio Busoni asked Sibelius to supply an orchestral piece for a series of concerts in Berlin, with the composer himself conducting his work. Sibelius chose En Saga in the end but revised the work first. This revised version was first performed with the Helsinki Philharmonic again on November 2nd, 1902, as a sort of trial run, although the Berlin concert that followed was also a success for Sibelius, if not for the other composers on the program. In four movements initially, Sibelius reworked his most popular symphony into three movements in the midst of his own internal debate about whether he should continue composing in the late Romantic style with which he was so familiar or follow the compositional changes that were taking place with modernists such as Schoenberg or Stravinsky or impressionists such as Ravel and Debussy. This crisis was resolved in his fifth symphony, where the composer chose to stay within the frames of harmonic language of late-19th century Romanticism, instead opting to innovate in the realms of macrostructure (three movements instead of four) and instrumental coloring (the swaying motif in the horns during the third movement which was inspired by swan-calls). Of the 1919 revision, Sibelius strove to give the work, \"a more human form, more down-to-earth, more vivid.\" The 1915 premiere took place on December 8th, 1915, performed by the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, with the composer conducting. The 1919 version was premiered by the same ensemble and conductor on November 24, 1919. Delayed by a move to Helsinki and the composer's increasing addiction to alcohol, Sibelius began work earnestly in 1903 and into 1904, with an intention to dedicate the work to an acquaintance, Willy Burmester, who was to premiere the work. Financial considerations resulted in the premiere being rushed, with a less well-known local violinist named Victor Novácek asked to learn a very difficult violin concerto in very little time, to perform with the Helsinki Philharmonic on February 8, 1904 under the composer's baton. The failure that followed compelled Sibelius to withdraw the work as written.  He revised the work in 1905, making cuts and changes to the harmony and orchestration. The revised version was premiered on October 19, 1905, with soloist Karel Halír performing with the Berlin Court Orchestra, Richard Strauss conducting. The work would fully enter the repertoire following the first recording made by the great Jascha Heifetz in 1935. Originally written in 1899 for a Finnish press fund-raising gala under the name \"Finland Awakens,\" this piece, along with a few other works performed at the gala, were written to covertly oppose Russia's increasing censorship. Sibelius revised and renamed this work to its current title in 1900. It premiered on July 2, 1900, in Helsinki by the Helsinki Philharmonic Society conducted by Robert Kajanus. At times, FINLANDIA was performed under different names to avoid Russian censorship until Finland gained independence following World War I. The piece begins in a tense and ominous mood, played by brass and timpani. The mood intensifies with the addition of strings and woodwinds. It gradually leads to a more jubilant and militant section followed by the famous hymn-like theme. Sibelius later reworked the hymn to be a stand-alone piece, \"Finlandia Hymn.\" Words were then given to this hymn, which has become one of the most important national songs of Finland. Its first performance on November 13 at the Imperial Alexander University in Helsinki could scarcely be heard due to the rowdy and restless behavior of the audience. Ten days later, Sibelius conducted the overture, and three movements which he later developed into the KARELIA SUITE, Op. 11. The Intermezzo enshrines the courage of the Karelian people who stood up against their Lithuanian oppressors, followed by a somber and dignified Ballade based on a Karelian folk melody. The Alla Marcia, a brisk and sunny march, brings the work to a rousing conclusion. Instrumentation: 2+Picc.2(1st dEH).2.2: 4.3.3.1: Timp.Perc(3-4): Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set). Hymnlike in nature, the music is constructed as a smooth, continuous stream of similar melodic phrases that flow into and out of each other. Combining a rich sonority with a sense of poignance, the work projects an almost religious statement in a world before the Second World War.
