The final and most popular opera in a trio known as Il trittico (The Triptych), each one dealing with the concealment of a death, the work premiered at the Metropolitan Opera on December 14, 1918. It tells the story of four family members anxiously discussing the contents of their very recently deceased family member, Buoso Donati, only to discover to their horror that he had left everything to a monastery. Gianni Schicchi, not related to the family, arrives and concocts a scheme to have a new will written as nobody but the family knows Buoso is dead. But when the notary arrives Schicchi, pretending to be a Buoso on the mend, dictates that his house, mule, and mills should be left to Gianni Schicchi, which allows him to offer marriage between his daughter Lauretta and Donati family member Rinuccio. Lauretta's soprano aria, O mio babbino caro (Oh, my dear papa), is among the most well known in opera and is frequently sung as an encore in recitals or concerts. Set during the California Gold Rush, the opera follows the story of Minnie, a saloon owner who becomes entangled in a love triangle involving a mysterious outlaw, Dick Johnson (alias Ramerrez), and the local sheriff, Jack Rance. Known for its sweeping emotional palette and harmonic daring, the opera stands apart from Puccini's more frequently performed works through its atmospheric evocation of the American West and its unconventional heroine. While LA FANCIULLA DEL WEST is less commonly staged than LA BOHÈME or TOSCA, it has gained increasing recognition in recent decades for its lush orchestration, dramatic integrity, and the vocal and dramatic demands it places on its performers, earning a respected and growing place in the 20th-century operatic repertoire. Pinkerton intends to divorce Butterfly when he returns to the United States, but she believes that the marriage will last forever. When Pinkerton returns to Japan with his new wife Kate, Butterfly commits seppuku with her father's knife after placing an American flag in the hand of her son. The opera contains one of the repertoire's best known soprano arias, Un bel di, vedremo in which Butterfly longs for Pinkerton to return to Japan. The original premiere of a version in two acts on February 17, 1904 at La Scala in Milan was a disaster, resulting in Puccini withdrawing that version and substantially rewriting the opera. The second version was in three acts, and it premiered on May 28, 1904 in Brescia to much greater success. In 1906 and 1907, Puccini created a third and fourth version for the Metropolitan Opera in New York and for Paris respectively. Finally, again in 1907, Puccini made the final revisions to the opera for a fifth version, and this is the one most often performed today, referred to as the \"Standard Version.\" This version is for reduced orchestra by Ettore Panizza.
