Composer Mark Burrows received his undergraduate degree in music education from Southern Methodist University and his graduate degree in conducting from Texas Christian University. He has many years of experience as a composer, conductor, and educator. In addition to composing, Mark serves as a guest clinician and leads workshops and reading sessions at several conferences each year. He lives in Fort Worth, Texas with his wife, Nina, and their daughters, Emma and Grace.

What inspired you to write Riu, Riu, Chiu?

I love carols, and always enjoy getting to set some of the less well-known carols. "Riu, Riu, Chiu" dates back to the 1500s and yet the rhythmic vitality gives it a sense of immediacy that is timeless.

What teaching suggestions do you have to share for Riu, Riu, Chiu?

Sing this with a buoyancy that allows the rhythm and text to really sparkle. Oversinging can really drag not only the rhythm, but the pitch. And have ensemble awareness—recognize which voice part is singing the melody at any given point.

What message do you have for singers learning this piece?

Have fun! Enjoy the rhythm, the Spanish, the occasional changing meter. The sheet music is just notes on a page, but you get to make it dance!
