Between the Lines: "A Holiday Fiesta!" by Mary Donnelly

A Holiday Fiesta! is a festive partner song combining the traditional Mexican folk song "Dale, Dale, Dale" with an original tune all about swinging at the piñata. With a choice of English or Spanish words and perfectly paired independent melodies, it's a great choice for singers taking their first cracks at harmony.

Co-arranger Mary Donnelly earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Nevada. While still a college student, she helped organize two children's choruses and enjoyed it so much that she decided to go back to school and become certified to teach music. She later received a Master's Degree in Education from Lesley College in Cambridge Massachusetts. Mary is now retired, having taught general music and choir in elementary and middle school for thirty years.

What inspired you to write A Holiday Fiesta! ?

The anticipation and joy of children who are playing the piñata game is infectious. The song “Dale, Dale, Dale” is representative of that feeling, especially around the Christmas holiday.

What teaching suggestions do you have to share for A Holiday Fiesta! ?

Practice the Spanish pronunciation until students are comfortable with it. Help students to discern the AB form of the song demonstrating the distinct moods of the sections. Make sure students can sing both the original song and the partner song independently. Perhaps have students help create and perform riser choreography to accompany the song.
