5 Stress Management Tips for Piano Teachers
Setting boundaries between your work and personal lives is only one piece of the puzzle. Once you’ve got those boundaries in place and you feel like you’ve got a pretty decent routine going, there are still unexpected bumps in the road. Everyone has stress—it’s an unavoidable part of being human. We can’t control every situation or every element of our life. But rather than stressing out about stress and our lack of control over every circumstance, it’s more important to learn how to manage your stress and deal with it when it inevitably comes along. There are several practical and easy ways to plan for and deal with stress. It doesn’t have to take more than 5 or 10 minutes of your day, but can make a world of difference!
5 Quick Tips for Managing Your Stress
1. Drink your favorite tea or coffee.
A few minutes of quiet and a comforting hot beverage can go a long way towards feeling like you can conquer anything the day throws at you!
2. Read a book.
Take just 5 minutes somewhere in your day to sit down by yourself, forget about all the items on your to-do list, and occupy your mind with something else.
3. Take a walk.
Gentle movement and activity is incredibly beneficial for your physical well-being, and getting outside in the open air is great for clearing your mind and getting perspective.
4. Meditate.
There are many different forms of meditation, but across the board there are widely-acknowledged benefits. Studies show that it decreases stress and increases your concentration. Whether you practice “true” meditation, or just take 5 minutes for yourself to clear your mind and take a few deep breaths, it will boost your mood significantly.
5. Talk to other teachers.
Teaching one-on-one piano lessons can be a very isolated profession. Get connected to the community of teachers in your area, run scenarios past them. You’ll be reminded that your student’s issue is not unheard of, you might pick up some teaching strategies, you’ll be validated in your teaching skills, and you won’t feel so isolated.
