Description
Claude Debussy (1862-1918) composed the six songs he would in 1903 title ARIETTES OUBLIÉES (FORGOTTEN SONGS), L. 60/ CD 63, between 1885 and 1887. Each song is a setting of the poetry of Paul Verlaine, a poet doing with words what Debussy trying to do with music. Two of the songs premiered on February 2, 1889, at the Société nationale de musique in Paris, Maurice Bagès singing with the composer at the piano. The second song in the cycle, IL PLEURE DANS MON CŒUR, compares the falling of rain to falling tears, with the almost continuous eighth notes in the piano meant to represent raindrops as a melody full of sadness floats over the accompaniment. This transcription for violin and piano was completed by violinist Arthur Hartmann and served as the impetus that propelled Debussy and Hartmann into a long friendship.
