Description
Antonín Dvorák (1841-1904) composed his cycle of songs entitled GIPSY SONGS, Op. 55, in 1880 four the outstanding German tenor Gustav Walter, who premiered them at his recital in Vienna on February 4, 1881. A setting of seven poems from Adolf Heyduk's collection of poems called GIPSY MELODIES, the works are among the most successful items in the concert repertory, particularly the 4th song, SONGS MY MOTHER TAUGHT ME. Song titles: 1. Má písen zas mi láskou zní / My song rings out with love again; 2. Aj! Kterak trojhranec muj / Hey, how my triangle; 3. A les je tichý kolem kol / The woods are silent all around; 4. Když mne stará matka / Songs my mother taught me; 5. Struna naladena / Now the string is tuned, lad; 6. Široké rukávy / Flowing sleeves and trousers; 7. Dejte klec jestrábu / Give the hawk a cage. This critical edition by Otakar Šourek includes text in Czech, German, and English. Versions are available from the publisher for both high voice (original keys) and medium voice (transposed).
