Description
PARIDE ED ELENA (PARIS AND HELEN), Wq. 39, composed by Christoph Willibald Gluck (1714–1787), premiered at the Burgtheater in Vienna on November 3, 1770. This opera, the third in Gluck's series of "reform operas" following ORFEO ED EURIDICE and ALCESTE, continues his mission to strip opera of excessive ornamentation and focus on dramatic clarity and emotional truth. The libretto, by Ranieri de' Calzabigi, recounts the mythological tale of Paris (Paride) and Helen (Elena), focusing on Paris's attempts to win Helen's love and convince her to leave Sparta for Troy, setting the stage for the Trojan War. Notable for its graceful melodic lines and elegant orchestration, the opera is unique in Gluck's output for its predominantly lyrical and intimate character rather than grand tragedy. Despite its historical importance and musical beauty, PARIDE ED ELENA remains relatively obscure and is rarely performed today, primarily due to the demanding castrato role of Paride—now usually sung by a high tenor or mezzo-soprano—but it holds a respected place among connoisseurs of 18th-century opera and Gluck's revolutionary oeuvre.
