Description
Carl Nielsen (1865-1931) composed VED EN UNG KUNSTNERS BÅRE (AT THE BIER OF A YOUNG ARTIST), CNW 36/ FS 58, in memory of the Danish painter Oluf Hartmann who died suddenly in January 1910 at the age of 31. The Gade Quartet gave the first performance of the work under the name ANDANTE LAMENTOSO on January 21, at his Cemetery Chapel funeral in Holmen. Nielsen completed a version for string orchestra in April, conducting it for an Easter concert at the Church of Our Lady in Copenhagen. The work was also played at Nielsen's own funeral service on October 9, 1931, in Copenhagen Cathedral. Despite its brevity, its effect is intense and poignant. A count of 8-8-5-5-5 string are included in the set.
