Description
Baroque composer Henry Purcell (1659-1695) wrote incidental music for the play ABDELAZER, OR THE MOOR'S REVENGE by Aphra Behn in 1695. While the play, first performed on or before July 3, 1676, flopped, Purcell's incidental music proved more successful. The music consisted of ten movements, and it has been recorded numerous times. The second movement, Rondeau, is the most popular, and it was used as the theme for Benjamin Britten's THE YOUNG PERSON'S GUIDE TO THE ORCHESTRA in addition to other media such as television and video games. This modern edition for string orchestra and harpsichord was produced by Hilmar Höckner in 1926, and includes on the first nine instrumental movements, omitting the tenth, which was the only one to include a vocalist. A violin 3 part, transposed from the viola, is included. Instrumentation: String Orchestra (8.8.3-5.5.5 in set): Hpchd. Movements: 1. Overture (D minor); 2. Rondeau (D minor); 3. Air (D Major); 4. Air (G Major); 5. Minuet (G Major); 6. Air (G minor); 7. Jig (G minor); 8. Hornpipe 'Hole in the Wall' (B-flat Major); 9. Air (G minor). Reprint edition.
