Description
While he is known best for his operas and tone poems, Richard Strauss (1864-1949) did compose eight marches and also some fanfares. The German composer wrote KÖNIGSMARSCH (also titled MILITÄRISCHER FESTMARSCH) in 1906 for King Wilhelm II, first for piano, then for orchestra and military band. The work was dedicated to the king, and Wilhelm II awarded Strauss the citizenship award of the Imperial Order of the Third Class as a result. The orchestra version, utilizing both the harmonic power and orchestral forces common to the late Romantic era, premiered on March 6, 1907, for a Berlin palace concert, Strauss conducting. Instrumentation: 2+2Picc.2.2+2EbCl.2+CBsn: 8.4.4.1: Timp.Perc(3-4): 2Hp: Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set): Banda (8Tpt.Timp). The banda parts are customarily played from a loft or some other section of the hall above the orchestra. Reprint edition.
