Description
Composed in 1873, THE TEMPEST (BURYA), Op. 18/TH 44 is a symphonic fantasy based on Shakespeare's play of the same name by Peter Ilyitch Tchaikovsky (1840-1893). Upon a suggestion from the critic and mentor Vladimir Stasov, he sketched the entire work in ten days. It premiered at a Russian Musical Society concert in Moscow on December 7, Nikolai Rubinstein conducting. The preface to the score is a paraphrase of the original program as written by Stasov himself: "The Sea. The magician Prospero commands his spirit Ariel to create a storm, of which a victim is the fortunate Ferdinand. The enchanted island. The first timid stirrings of love between Ferdinand and Miranda. Ariel. Caliban. The lovers are overwhelmed by their passion. Prospero renounces his magical powers and leaves the island. The Sea." Instrumentation: 2+Picc.2.2.2: 4.2.3.1: Timp.Perc(1-2): Str([3.3.3]-[3.3.2]-7-[2.2.2]-5 in set).
