Originally written by Modest Mussorgsky for piano and orchestra, Night on Bald Mountain, alternatively Night on the Bare Mountain, was long left neglected by the composer. Having several musical iterations in existence, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, whose orchestration brought the piece out of obscurity, initially struggled with which of Mussorgsky's versions to use. Already a popular piece in Rimsky-Korsakov's day, its use in Disney's Fantasia cemented its place in the popular consciousness.
