Description
Franz Liszt (1811–1886) composed his CONCERTO FOR PIANO No. 1 in E-flat major, S. 124, over an extended period between 1835 and 1856, revising it further before its premiere in Weimar on February 17, 1855, with the composer as soloist and Hector Berlioz conducting. Dedicated to his longtime friend and patron Henry Litolff, the concerto broke new ground in its integration of soloist and orchestra, presenting a single continuous structure of four interrelated movements rather than the traditional three. The edition by Bernhard Stavenhagen, one of Liszt's pupils, later helped preserve the composer's interpretive style and nuances for modern performance. At its premiere, the work dazzled audiences with its virtuosic brilliance, lyrical invention, and harmonic daring—hallmarks of Liszt's pianistic genius. Today, the CONCERTO FOR PIANO No. 1 remains one of the cornerstones of the Romantic concerto repertoire, beloved for its bold energy, thematic unity, and its thrilling blend of symphonic grandeur and pianistic display. Instrumentation: 2+Picc.2.2.2: 2.2.3.0: Timp.Perc(2): Str (9.8.7.6.5 in set): Solo Pno not included. Reprint edition.
