Written in 1883, Chabrier was inspired following a trip to Spain with his wife, where he learned about the local folk genres. The work was premiered by Orchestre de Société des Nouveaux Concerts in Paris, November 4th, 1883, under the baton of Charles Lamoureux, to whom the work was dedicated.
