Description
CHANTS D'AUVERGNE (SONGS FROM THE AUVERGNE) is a five volume collection of folk songs from the Auvergne region of France, adapted by French composer Joseph Canteloube (1879-1957) for soprano and orchestra or piano. Beginning the project of collecting the traditional tunes over the course of many years, Canteloube's efforts helped preserve the artistic heritage of the region as the rural exodus during the two world wars and changes to the way of life of the region would begin to cause the songs to disappear. The most well-known song from the collections is BAÏLÈRO (sometimes called LE BAYLERE or THE SHEPHERD'S SONG), which is included in Volume 1. Songs in Volume 2: 1. Pastourelle; 2. Text is in French and the local language dialect, Auvergnat, a dialect of Occitan. Reprint edition.
