Louis Spohr is a German composer who lived at the same time as Beethoven. He was an outstanding violinist and is remembered mostly for his compositions for the violin. Proudly as the Eagle is a vocal excerpt from one of his operas and is quite well suited to instrumental ensembles. The text speaks of letting our voices “swell up to the sky like an eagle.”
