AGON is the Greek word meaning battle, struggle or conflict. The following quote from Plato's SYMPOSIUM helps to give insight into Nelhybel's music in general and into his AGON in particular: "'The one in conflict with itself is held together, like the harmony of the bow and the lyre.' (Heraclitus, fr. 45) Of course, it is absurd to speak of harmony as being in conflict, or as arising out of elements which are still conflicting, but perhaps he meant that the art of music was to create harmony by resolving the discord..." - (A paragraph from the program notes for AGON's premiere performance, written by Cheryl Y.
