Teach Yourself To Play Series for Macintosh: 
Program Freezes: Multimedia Song Player "Loading..." Error Fix or Patch

This is caused by a preference file not being written. It usually happens on a PowerPC that tries to run a file before finishing the write to the preferences folder. This causes the Mac to freeze. Either one of the following solutions will permanently fix the freezing problem.

FIX: When the program freezes, force-quit out by pressing the Option + Command (apple key) + Escape keys simultaneously. This permanently fixes the problem in almost all cases. The program releases the preference file to be written properly.

Patch: If you prefer, you can download the below file, double-click on it, then run the install file to execute the patch. This patch will install a file into the preferences folder. If you need further help or information, please email tech support.

Teach Yourself To Play Guitar for Windows:
Script Error, Problem Reading .ini file

This is caused by an .ini file not being read properly by certain computers. This patch overwrites the existing .ini file and eliminates the error.

We now have patches to allow the Teach Yourself series to run on the Macintosh OSX platform. (No fix yet for the Deluxe series.)

After installing your TYTP software using either OS 9 or Classic Mode, run the appropriate OSX installer:

Download the appropriate patch to fix known issues with EMT 1.0. Below are just some examples of fixed problems:

4. Possible issue of sound not playing
5. Cannot properly save a student file.

This free add-on to users of Alfred's Essentials of Music Theory (Educator Version) gives the user the ability to print out customized tests for their students. This upgrade will only work if you have EMT already installed on your computer.

Important! This add-on is for users who have ONLY Volume 1 of Essentials of Music Theory installed on their computer. If you have installed Volumes 2 OR 3, you should NOT install this add-on, as it will install older files to your computer. If you need further help or information, please email tech support.

1.  After printing these instructions, click here to download the ctestpc.exe file.  A window will prompt you for the location where you would like to save the file; make sure you remember this location, as you will have to find the file later. 

2.  Close your browser and any other programs you may have open.

3.  After the download has finished, open the folder where you downloaded the file.

4. Double click on the ctestpc.exe file.

5. A dialog box will appear confirming the location where you wish to unzip this compressed file ( It will display the default directory for your computer, e.g. C:\windows\TEMP ).  Please make a note of this directory, as you will need to locate this folder later in step 7.  Click the "Unzip" button.

6. The file will unzip.  When it is finished, a message showing "15 files unzipped successfully" will appear.  Click "OK", then click "Close" to close the dialog box.

7. Locate and open the folder ( from Step 5 ) where you unzipped the files, then double-click on the setup.exe file to install the add-on.  Make sure you install the add-on to the same directory as the Essentials of Music Theory (Educator Version).  If you wish, you may delete the original unzipped files from your temporary folder after installation.

8. You can now access the Custom Test Designer from whithin the EMT program.  Simply log in as the instructor and click on "Scores".  Then click on the "Tests" tab to access the Custom Test Designer.

1.  After printing these instructions, click here to download the ctestmac.sea.hqx file.  The download manager will show you where the file is being saved to your hard drive. Make sure you remember this location, as you will have to find the file later. 

2.  Close your browser and any other programs you may have open.

3.  After the download has finished, open the folder where you downloaded the file.

4. Double click on the ctestmac.sea.sit file.

5. A dialog box will appear confirming the location where you wish to unzip this compressed file. Choosing your desktop is usually convenient. Click the "Unstuff" button.

6. The file will unstuff.

7. Locate and open the folder (from Step 5) where you unzipped the files, then double-click on the ctestmac file to install the add-on.  Just follow the instructions to install.

8. You can now access the Custom Test Designer from whithin the EMT program.  Simply log in as the instructor and click on "Scores".  Then click on the "Tests" tab to access the Custom Test Designer.

1.  After printing these instructions, click the appropriate link above to download the student transfer utility installer. A window will prompt you for the location where you would like to save the file; make sure you remember this location, as you will have to find the file later.

2.  Close your browser and any other programs you may have open.

3.  After the download has finished, open the folder where you downloaded the file.

4. Double click on the installer file, and follow the installer directions to install the utility.

5. The installer will create a folder called "EMT Student Transfer Program" in the destination folder you selected during installation. Double-click the "EMT Transfer Utility" icon located inside the folder to start the utility.
