This toccata-like solo is marked presto and literally seems to speed through the night. In C minor and 4/4 meter, it features ostinatos in the left-hand accompaniment and in the right-hand melody. In A-B-A form, harmonic fourths used in the B section imitate the mournful sound of the train whistle. The entire piece begins quietly, builds to forte, then fades quietly at the end.
