Alfred Music, in an effort to better serve its retailers, educators, and consumers, is proud to announce the promotion of Andrew Surmani
to Chief Marketing Officer
Starting at Alfred Music as a Marketing Assistant 25 years ago, Andrew Surmani
has been witness, support, and leader during times of major change and growth for Alfred Music. He has held roles in multiple areas of the marketing department as the Marketing Manager, Director of Promotions, the Managing Director of the School and Church Team, and the Vice President and then Senior Vice President of Marketing, before receiving his appointment to the Chief Marketing Officer position earlier this year. He played a major role in developing Sound Innovations, the world’s first customizable band and orchestra methods available to teachers, and played a key role in Alfred Music’s acquisition of Warner Bros. Publications, which greatly expanded the company’s extensive catalog.
Andrew Surmani will lead Alfred Music’s global marketing and sales strategy and growth, focusing on creating synergy between the sales and marketing teams, product line teams and Alfred Music’s international offices. He will concentrate on strengthening relationships with existing accounts, exploring new end-user technologies, expanding the company’s reach into new markets and sales channels, broadening Alfred Music’s global reach with its international offices in Singapore, Australia, Germany, and the United Kingdom and exploring new opportunities for growth in developing countries.
Andrew’s defining moment in music was as a high school senior in Oakland, CA, when he conducted an impromptu trumpet audition over the telephone (via a collect call) which led to him being selected as one of only two people from the state of California to be offered a spot in the McDonald’s All-American High School Marching Band and Jazz Band. “I decided in that moment to just go for it and the risk was well-worth the reward. This lesson in taking chances has greatly contributed to my success as an individual and as a music industry professional.”
Surmani attended California State University, Northridge where he graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Music degree in Trumpet Performance and also an MBA degree. While at Northridge, he played with the CSUN Wind Ensemble, Orchestra, and Jazz “A” Band. An accomplished musician, Surmani also played trumpet in the California All-State Honor Band and the Walt Disney World All-American College Jazz Band. He has toured throughout the USA, Europe, the Middle East, and Japan, and performed at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center in New York, and the Lake Biwa (Japan), Istanbul (Turkey), Juan les Pins (France), Wigan (England) and Umbria (Italy) Jazz Festivals. In addition to his work as CMO of Alfred Music, Surmani is a founding board member and the current President of the international non-profit Jazz Education Network. He is also an assistant professor of Music Industry Studies at California State University, Northridge serving as the academic lead for their Masters in Music Industry Administration degree program. In addition, Andrew serves on the music technology advisory board of Indiana University/Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) and the advisory board of TI:ME (Technology In Music Education).
“I’m really excited about the future,” said Surmani. “We’ve developed long term strategic plans and gone through every area of our business with a fine-tooth comb looking for new growth opportunities. The plans that are currently underway are very exciting for Alfred Music and the music industry, as a whole. The music industry is going through a time of transition and I’m looking forward to offering our dealers and customers opportunities to experience music in new ways.”
