Alfred Congratulates Dave Black On His New Role as Vice President & Editor-In-Chief of the School & Church Publishing Division

LOS ANGELES, CA  -  Friday, May 28, 2010

Dave Black Alfred is happy to announce the appointment of Dave Black to the position of Vice President and Editor-in-Chief, School and Church Publishing. In his new role, Dave will continue to manage all school and church acquisition editors, and oversee strategic editorial direction for the division. He will also continue in his role as the director and acquisition editor for the school percussion division.

In announcing the appointment, Andrew Surmani, Senior Vice President of Marketing and Managing Director of School and Church Publishing said, “Dave Black is an outstanding editor and leader for our division and he has been instrumental to our growth during his years with the company.”

Dave joined Alfred 25 years ago in the marketing department before becoming an instrumental editor in 1987. Ambitious and dedicated, he advanced to become the Director of Percussion Acquisitions in 1990, Director of Instrumental Music in 1994, and later the Editor-in-Chief in 2004. He has been a valued member of the team that has helped Alfred become the leading publisher of educational music materials.

Dave received his Bachelor of Music in percussion performance from California State University, Northridge. He has traveled around the world with a variety of entertainers and shows, having performed and/or recorded with such artists as Alan King, Robert Merrill, June Allyson, Anita O’Day, and Jerry Hey.

As a prolific composer and arranger, more than 60 of his compositions and arrangements have been published by most of the major publishing companies, many of which have been recorded. He is the recipient of several awards and commissions, including 21 consecutive ASCAP Popular Composer Awards and two Grammy participation/nomination certificates. In addition, many of his compositions have been used as source/background music on numerous TV shows and movies including Drumline, All My Children, Coach, The Drew Carey Show, General Hospital, Ellen, Grace Under Fire, Nightline, Roseanne, and Good Morning America. He is also the author/co-author of several national and international best-selling books, including Alfred’s Drum Method Books 1 & 2, Alfred’s Beginning Drumset Method, and Sound Innovations for Concert Band.

As an active member of the Percussive Arts Society (PAS), Dave served on the Board of Directors for six years, was a member of the Sustaining Members Advisory Council, and was selected to host/chair the 1991 Percussive Arts Society International Convention.
