Much has been written about the art of playing drums but odd time signatures remain a challenge for many drummers. Renowned drum ambassador/drummer/educator Dom Famularo and Italian drummer/educator Massimo Russo address these challenges with the release of their new book, Odd Feelings
. This drumset technique book designed to help drummers master uncommon time signatures.
Based on the concept introduced in Famularo’s best-selling book, It’s Your Move, Odd Feelings
presents grooves and exercises in 18 different time signatures. Odd Feelings
gives drum students a method for breaking down odd meters, such as 5/4, 9/8, and 21/16, using a written lesson reinforced by visual and audio examples. Divided into chapters on quarter-, eighth-, and sixteenth-note based meters with an additional section about mixed-meter grooves, it also includes eight play-along tracks designed to get the student grooving in each of the time signatures introduced throughout the course. Included with the book is a multi-media disc containing MP3s (with demonstration and minus-one play-along tracks) and videos (which highlight key examples from the book and include performance demos of the play-along tracks).
Famularo has earned a reputation of being the world’s leading motivational drumset artist/educator. Tutored by legendary greats Joe Morello, Jim Chapin, Al Miller, and Ronnie Benedict, he combines the masterful techniques of the past with the parameter-pushing concepts of the future. Famularo was voted Best Clinician by the readers of Modern Drummer
magazine in 2005 and 2006, and by the readers of DRUM!
in 2006. He is the recipient of the Sabian Lifetime Achievement Award and the Cape Breton Drum Festival Legend Award.
Russo received his diploma with honors while studying with M. Vittorino Naso. Since then, he has been teaching and performing on the national and international level. Having performed clinics and master classes across Europe with artists such as Rob Hirons, Damien Schmitt, and Dom Famularo, Russo is considered one of the foremost upcoming clinicians and musicians on the drumming scene.
