The world leader in educational music publishing has signed a deal with the family of the late Roger Nichols, the award-winning recording engineer, producer, inventor, and digital audio pioneer, to publish a new series of instructional works that Roger began writing before his untimely passing in 2011. In addition to being a celebrated music production studio wizard, Roger was passionate about education and writing, having penned regular columns over many years for EQ Magazine. He also wrote regularly for other trade publications, as well as several never-before published books on the art and science of modern-day recording techniques.
First in the series is The Roger Nichols Recording Method which is being published directly from Roger’s wide array of educational writings from the many classes and seminars he taught around the world, beginning with his “101” approach to audio production. Nichols was best known for his work with Steely Dan and John Denver, though his incredible audio engineering talents made him the first choice for numerous major musical acts including the Beach Boys, Stevie Wonder, Frank Zappa, Crosby Stills & Nash, Al Di Meola, Roy Orbison, Gloria Estefan, Diana Ross, Kenny Loggins, Mark Knopfler, and James Taylor, among many others. In 2006, Nichols' work was formally recognized by The Recording Academy's Producers and Engineers Wing, and was later honored with his eighth Grammy Award for “Special Merit/Technical” on February 11, 2012.
Connie Nichols, speaking on behalf of the Nichols family says, “I am especially grateful to Ron Manus, Mike Lawson and the entire Alfred Publishing team for ensuring that a new generation will benefit from Roger’s artistry and inventive brilliance in the recording studio by releasing The Roger Nichols Recording Method. Roger would also be thrilled about it, especially since Alfred CEO Ron Manus, was once his 2nd Engineer in the studio.”
“We are so thrilled to have the opportunity to publish Roger’s work,” said Alfred CEO Ron Manus. “I can think of no better way to honor his memory and legacy than by making his unparalleled experience and knowledge available to the world.”
The Roger Nichols Recording Method will be available in June, 2013.
