Gateway to French Diction Released by Alfred Music Publishing

LOS ANGELES, CA  -  Friday, December 07, 2012
The leader in educational music publishing releases Gateway to French Diction, the last installment to complete the Gateway series of coordinated diction manuals and anthologies, designed to give students an understanding of what they sing. Perfect for vocal students, this new edition helps singers achieve an authentic style by providing detailed explanations of phonetics, grammar, and interpretation. Every French example—word or phrase—is translated into English and is also spoken perfectly on the included CD by Paris Opera Comique Diction coach and native French speaker, Dr. Agnès Terrier.

Thomas Hampson, recognized as one of the world’s finest classical singers, says the series "not only achieves an excellent study of the tools for proper translation and diction, it goes much deeper and more importantly to the teaching of musical and poetic expression from the inner side of the language."

Related books include the Gateway to French Mélodies Book & CD sets for high and low voices. These collections bring to life great themes of French art such as love, nature, and the purpose of life. The cultural context of each song is explained, along with its place in the life and works of the composer. Many of the included songs have been out of print for more than a century, and a few are published for the very first time. Piano accompaniments are included on the companion CD, beautifully played by Joan Thompson and expertly engineered by Grammy® Award-winner Matthew Snyder.

The songs include “Plaisir d’amour,” edited from the composer’s original 1784 edition; seven works by women composers, including Romantic opera’s Maria Malibran and Pauline Viardot; works of French operatic masters such as Gounod, Saint-Saëns, Bizet, and Massenet; six songs by Gabriel Fauré and four by Claude Debussy; and two duets from contrasting historical periods.

Other collections in the series include Gateway to German Lieder, Gateway to Italian Songs and Arias, Gateway to Italian Diction, and Gateway to German Diction.

Gateway to French Diction (00-36535) Book & CD set is now available for $29.99 at music retail stores and at alfred.com/voice. Books and CDs are also available separately.
