Alfred Music Publishing Congratulates Warner/Chappell Songwriters for Tony® Award Wins

LOS ANGELES, CA  -  Tuesday, June 12, 2012
Alfred Music Publishing, representing Warner/Chappell songwriters in print, congratulates the winners from Warner/Chappell Music who were honored with a total of 15 wins at the 66th Annual Tony® Awards, including “Best Musical” for the critically-acclaimed stage musical adaptation of the film Once (which won more than any other show on Sunday) – composed by Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová of The Swell Season – and “Best Original Score” for Newsies, composed by songwriter Alan Menken.

Other award-wins for Once include “Best Book of a Musical,” “Best Orchestrations,” “Best Sound Design of a Musical,” as well as four others. In addition to winning “Best Original Score,” Newsies also won “Best Choreography.” The Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess (Co-Composed by George & Ira Gershwin and DuBose & Dorothy Heyward) won “Best Revival of a Musical” and “Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical.”

Additional Tony wins for Warner/Chappell songwriters include “Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical” and “Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Musical” for Nice Work If You Can Get It (Composed by George & Ira Gershwin), and “Best Costume Design of a Musical” for Follies (Composed by Stephen Sondheim).

At last year’s Tony Awards, The Book of Mormon, co-written by Warner/Chappell songwriter Bobby Lopez, won nine awards, including “Best Musical” and “Best Score.” Additional Tony awards were given to Anything Goes – written by Warner/Chappell legend, Cole Porter – as well as Catch Me If You Can – written by Warner/Chappell songwriters Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman – and Priscilla Queen of the Desert – which features several licensed W/C songs.
