Alfred Music Publishing is saddened by the passing of esteemed author, talented drummer, and caring friend, Elliot Fine. He touched the hearts of many thousands of drummers through his music and his brilliant teaching.
Elliot was born on May 7, 1925, and grew up playing jazz and backing some of the idiom's greats. He began subbing in the Minnesota Orchestra in the early ‘50s, which evolved into a full-time position that lasted over 40 years. As a sought-after educator and author he was prolific, contributing to the art several drumming texts, including the classic, 4-Way Coordination, one of the most innovative and highly regarded of all drumset method books, which he co-authored with his friend and MN Orchestra section-mate, Marvin Dahlgren.
“I feel lucky and privileged to have met Elliot and to have spent some time talking, learning, and best of all, laughing with him,” reflects Rich Lackowski, Alfred’s Director of Marketing, PR, and Advertising. “His excitement and good spirit was incredibly contagious. Some people are touched by God with talent and kindness, and Elliot was indeed one of those people. He will be missed.”
Elliot passed away peacefully in his sleep, after a long and brave battle with cancer, May 4th, 2012. Alfred’s heartfelt thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of Elliott Fine.
